TEXTILE WET PROCESSING

QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF POLYESTER/COTTON BLEND FABRIC

       In polyester/cotton blend sample synthetic fibers i.e. polyester are insoluble in common solvents an therefor it is convenient to dissolve the second natural component the cotton in quantitative blend analysis of polyester/cotton.

      Cotton dissolves completely in 70% sulfuric acid so, 70% sulfuric acid is suitable for the quantitative analysis of polyester/cotton blend by dissolving cotton we can identify quantity of polyester by formula and quantity of cotton by difference.

     To start blend analysis size or finish has to be removed first from the sample take 1 gm of oven dried sample and transfer into conical flask having 100 ml 70% sulfuric acid solution. The treatment is given at room temperature for 60 minutes than sample is transferred into another beaker and wash completely with cold water and neutralize it by using mild alkali again wash the sample than dry it in the oven at 105*c temperature till the constant weigh is obtain oven dried weight of polyester can be calculated by following formula :

                                                      F x d
                                              P =  ------- X 100
                                                        W

                Where, P = Percentage of residual polyester in the blend
                             F = Oven dried weight of residual polyester in gm
                             d = Correction factor for loss of polyester due to effect of sulfuric acid
                             W = oven dried weight of blend in gm

                  Percentage of cotton = 100 - Percentage of residual polyester

                                              ------------------ %
