MEDIAL TEXTILES
INTRODUCTION
The Indian Medical Textile has an expected growth rate of about 20% per annul because of it is rising per capita income of the general public.
The extent of growth in the Meditech industry is due to the constant improvements and innovations in both textile technology and medical procedures. Due to it is numerous applications, medical textiles can be classified into four following categories:
- Non implantable materials - wound dressings, bandages, plasters etc.
- Implantable materials - sutures, vascular grafts, artificial joints etc.
- Extra corporeal devices - artificial kidney, liver and lungs.
- Healthcare/hygiene products - surgical clothing, surgical bedding, drapes, sanitary napkins, diapers, medical wipes etc.
Fibers in medical textiles are natural or synthetic. Fibers in medical textiles are bio degradable or non bio degradable.
FIBERS USED IN MEDICAL TEXTILES
fibers used in medicine and surgery may be classified depending on whether. All fibers used in medical applications must be non toxic, non allergic, non carcinogenic and must be able to be non sterilized without imparting any change in the physical or chemical characteristics. Natural fibers are cotton, wool, pulp and silk, but also included are the regenerated cellulosic fibers viscose rayon. They are widely used in non implantable materials as well as healthcare/hygiene products. Commonly used man made fibers include polyester, poly amide, polytetrafluroethylene. Non bio degradable fibers are those which take more than 6 months to degrade.
TECHNOLOGY IN BRIEF USED FOR MANUFACTURING MEDICAL TEXTILES
Medical textile products are based on fabrics and they are mainly of four types :
A) Woven
B) Knitted
C) Braided
D) Non woven
Woven Fabric :
Woven fabric only stretches diagonally on the bias directions unless the threads used are elastic.
Knitted Fabric :
Knitted fabric is a textile results from knitting.it is properties are distinct from woven fabric.
Braided Fabric :
In which yarn runs through the braid in all three directions.
Non woven Fabric :
Non woven fabric is a fabric like material made from staple fibers and long fibers.
The first three are made from the yarns while the last is made from fibers or even polymers.
CLASSIFICATION OF MEDICAL TEXTILES
1) Surgical
Implantable
Non-implantable
2) Extra corporeal
3) Healthcare and hygiene
